The incident took place on Saturday, June 1, when Red Hook Officer James Simmons responded to a call on Route 9/Fraleigh Lane in the Town of Red Hook for an unconscious male slumped over the steering wheel not breathing, the department said on Facebook.
Simmons, also a firefighter with the Tivoli Fire Department, sat the man up and saw that he was turning purple not breathing.
With the assistance of the Milan Fire Department Chief Kurt Mitzger, they took the man out of the vehicle and placed him on the ground where he still was not breathing.
Simmons then quickly administered the first dose of Narcan which did not have any effect. He quickly then ran back to his patrol car to retrieve more Narcan. He administered a second dose of Narcan, which helped the man start breathing again, the department said.
The man was transported to Northern Dutchess Hospital and survived the ordeal, police said.
The Village of Red Hook plans to award Simmons the Life-Saving Award in the near future.
